Family Winnipeg restaurants – happy kids, happy parents

Wondering where to find Family Winnipeg restaurants that the kids will be happy with?

And hoping to find somewhere that the adults can also find something tasty to eat, and maybe even a beer or a glass of wine with their meals?

Here are some suggestions.

Family Winnipeg Restaurants at The Forks

There are plenty of dining options at The Forks, Winnipeg

You really can’t go wrong with any of The Forks’ many and varied food offerings.

There are a couple of sit-at-the-table and licensed restaurants, ethnic food to eat at tables indoors or outside in summer, and three popular (also licensed) patios in summer and autumn.

Also (if you have a suite with a kitchen and prefer to cook yourself) there is fresh local fish, meats and produce.

AND, for those who'd rather just snack, there's candy at Sugar Mountain and candy, fudge and ice cream at various vendors inside The Forks Market.

The Forks is Winnipeg's most popular attraction and is open daily year-round.

Casa Burrito

Good and fast Mexican take-out – the familiar Mexican chicken burritos, tacos, quesadillas and salads, but here the difference is everything is baked rather than fried.

Everything we’ve tried is delicious, and most menu items come in either a lunch or dinner size. You can fill up, with beverage, for under $10.

Open daily, but only 4 to 9 p.m. on weekends. On Portage Avenue across the street from University of Winnipeg.

Family Winnipeg restaurants east of Downtown

Whistle Pig Drive Inn

For a good old-fashioned drive-in, you need to go east of downtown to The Whistle for really good homemade burgers and fries.

They also have gluten-free and wheat-free options. Kids meals, picnic tables outside, and dogs (on a leash) are welcome.

102 Victoria Street East in Transcona, Winnipeg. 224-4435.

Lovey’s BBQ & Smokehouse

Hungry for some BBQ?

Lovey’s in St. Boniface is a relaxed and rustic place for sandwiches, hand-cut fries and, best of all, BBQ ribs slow-cooked over a wood-burning pit. Here you can have a hearty feed of BBQ for about $15.

Open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sundays 3 to 7 p.m. 208 Marion, Winnipeg. 233-7427.

Family Winnipeg restaurants west of Downtown

Academy Lanes in Winnipeg is housed in a lovely old Art Deco theatre

Academy Uptown Bowling Lanes

Family fun bowling alley that also has a restaurant counter serving good burgers, sandwiches and various kid faves.

Open daily.

394 Academy, Winnipeg. 488-0000.

Family Winnipeg restaurants south of Downtown

Celebrations Dinner Theatre

The food servers are also the actors, there’s no telling what kind of silliness they’ll get up to, the prime rib is excellent, the jokes are suitable for kids and everyone leaves smiling.

1824 Pembina Highway (in Canad Inns Fort Garry). Call 823-8282 for tickets.

Aalto’s Family Dining

This chain is super popular with families because of the kid-friendly atmosphere. Has nightly themed buffets as well as table service, with meal prices in the $8 to $18 range.

Kids like the chance to make their own sundaes and slush-drinks; parents like the variety on the massive buffet.

Open daily at six of the Canad Inns locations in Winnipeg. The two Aalto’s closest to Downtown are at:

  • Canad Inn Polo Park, west of Downtown at 1405 St. Matthews Ave., Winnipeg. 775-8791.
  • Canad Inn Fort Garry, south of Downtown at 1824 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg. 261-7450.

  • In Winnipeg and small towns nearby…

Family Winnipeg restaurants -- Fall suppers

These are harvest dinners held throughout September and October, featuring home cooking and plenty of it, much anticipated because there are usually mountains of delectable perogies, cabbage rolls, turkey and, if you aren’t stuffed after all that, home-made pies.

Home cooking the way it might never happen at home, but it sure is somethin’ else. Serving is usually cafeteria-style, seating is family style, making it another good opportunity to meet the locals.

Visitors are welcome at Fall suppers (often fund-raisers for churches or community centres where they are held). Tickets are usually at the door and always an inexpensive way to eat very, very well.

To find out when and where, you need to look at notice boards outside churches and community centres. Fall Supper locations, dates and times are here.

Got a REALLY hungry family? Try these all you can eat Winnipeg restaurants.
