What's where in Winnipeg?

Downtown

In Downtown Winnipeg you’ll find the major hotels plus the Theatre District, Manitoba Museum and other major museums, the city's public Art Gallery, many of the most popular restaurants, and The Forks riverside entertainment, leisure, restaurant and shopping complex.

There are also the historic Exchange District; Chinatown, Manitoba Legislature, Centennial Hall (home of Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Manitoba Opera) and MTS Centre for big ticket concerts and Manitoba Moose hockey.

Also Downtown are Winnipeg Convention Centre, the Millennium Library (main branch of the public library) plus ballet and concerts at Centennial Hall and Goldeyes baseball at Canwest Global Park and shopping at The Bay, Portage Place and cityplace.

West of Downtown

West of Downtown are the newly expanded (in 2010) Richardson International Airport, where the bus station is also located, Canadian Forces Air Base and Polo Park Shopping Centre.

Blue Bombers (football) home games are played at Canad Inns stadium (just north of Polo Park Shopping Centre); Corydon Village (Little Italy) is a popular street for shopping and patio restaurants; Assiniboine Park has the city’s most beautiful and extensive public gardens, Ft. Whyte Alive is a nature preserve with walking trails and a herd of bison and Assiniboia Downs (ASD) offers professional horse racing May to September.

How's the weather?

South of Downtown

are the boutiques and restaurants of trendy Osborne Village, University of Manitoba’s main campus and St. Norbert.

East of Downtown

are St. Vital Shopping Centre, Saint Boniface, Fort Gibraltar, St. Vital and Transcona.

Keep going east, and you're on the Trans Canada (Highway 1), headed to the Whiteshell, Falcon Lake and Kenora, Ontario.

North of Downtown

are the vast CPR trainyards, the North End, Kildonan Park and routes north and north-east taking you to Bird’s Hill Provincial Park, Lockport, the Icelandic town of Gimli and the Islandic fising village of Hecla.
