Where is Winnipeg Manitoba?
If you were looking at a wall map of the United States, and placed a finger on the border between the states of Minnesota and North Dakota, then moved your finger directly up, it would be pointing to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Manitoba is the province at the centre of Canada, bordered to the east by Ontario, the west by Saskatchewan, the north by Hudson Bay and Nunavut, and the border with United States (and the states of Minnesota and North Dakota) to the south.
The border between Ontario and Manitoba is where, officially, Eastern Canada ends, and Western Canada begins.
Manitoba is officially part of what government entities call Central Canada, that is, the three Prairie Provinces of (east to west) Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Winnipeg is Manitoba’s largest city, with a population of just over 653,000, or more than half the population of Manitoba.
Today, downtown Winnipeg (the name is Cree for “Muddy Waters,” referring to the Red River which, like most rivers on the Prairies, is actually brownish-red) is where the Assiniboine and Red Rivers meet.
This is the same spot first used as a summer meeting place by First Nations peoples, going back at least 6,000 years (and possibly several thousands of years more than that).
