Winnipeg bed and breakfast homes and inns

If you love the personal touch B&B hosts offer, you have plenty of choice in Winnipeg bed and breakfast homes and inns!

The ones I’ve chosen to tell you about have everything you’d expect in a truly phenonmenal B&B – the friendly welcoming hosts, tasty food, ultra comfortable beds, attractive décor and all are spotlessly clean.

In addition to all this, each of these Winnipeg bed and breakfast homes and inns has that special something extra (or possibly something that’s truly unique).

Rates range from $70 to about $150 per night (all prices are for two people sharing a room and don't include tax).

Many of these B&Bs are lovingly restored century-old mansions in The Gates, three streets where the wealthy built their homes a century ago. They’ve been restored (with modern plumbing) but, as buildings from another era, may not be wheelchair-accessible. (If this is an issue, ask when you book.)

All are in locations that are attractive, convenient and very safe, in case you arrive after dark or want to get out and enjoy Winnipeg’s fantastic restaurants, theatres, concerts, ballet, events and nightlife.

Beechmount Bed and Breakfast

Beechmount B&B in Winnipeg

This is a Canada Select four-and-a-half star Winnipeg bed and breakfast.

In just about everyone’s opinion, Beechmount is the best B&B in Winnipeg based on beauty, location, the food and the hosts’ warm hospitality.

Here, you can indulge completely in Victorian-style gracious living.

Beechmount is a listed 1894 riverside mansion surrounded by gardens and parkland, with a beautiful conservatory and outdoor pool.

All the rooms are spacious, and there is also a three-bedroom family suite, but my choice would be the honeymoon suite, with its whirlpool tub for two, fireplace and its own screened-in verandah.

Every room is lovely, all with gorgeous views.

Christine and Giovanni are splendid hosts and their gourmet breakfasts, served in the sunroom overlooking the garden, are delicious -- they bake daily.

This quiet and beautiful historic house is just a 20-minute (or so) stroll along the river path to The Forks.

There is a two-night minimum stay in July and August and on weekends and holidays. The hosts are also fluent in French and Italian.

Rates for two people are $80 to $150 a night.

Beechmount Bed and Breakfast, 134 West Gate, Winnipeg. (204) 775-1144.

Galbraith House

This 1914 mansion is on one of Winnipeg prettiest ‘Christmas card’ streets, surrounded by mature elm trees, yet it’s an easy walk to Corydon Village or Osborne Street restaurants and boutiques.

The hosts are keen walkers, cyclists and cross-country skiers who can arrange cycle and ski rentals and also recommend the best cross-country skiing trails in and near Winnipeg.

If you’re not up for something that strenuous, the deck and sunroom are welcoming places to relax.

They serve a delicious hot breakfast with muffins and fruit.

A stay at Galbraith House is $75 to $85 per night.

Galbraith House, 299 Yale Ave., Winnipeg. (204) 488-4513.

River Gate Inn

River Gate Inn in Winnipeg

Built in 1919, this stately 21-room mansion has a pool, billiard room, rec room with a pool table and pinball and jacuzzi tubs.

Surrounded by cottonwood and elm trees, it also has a lovely location on the Assiniboine River. With its turn-of-the-last-century charm (there are claw-foot tubs), it would be a wonderful place for a relaxing Christmas or to get ready for your wedding or enjoy a girlfriend/escape weekend.

Guests praise the food, the friendly and helpful hosts and the comfortable beds.

Double rate is $89 to $119 per night.

River Gate Inn, 186 River Gate, Winnipeg. (204) 474-2761.

West Gate Manor

A block from the river, this is another gracious Winnipeg bed and breakfast mansion, mainly Victorian in décor but built in 1914 and now offering a European boutique inn experience.

Guests compliment the attentive hosts and good breakfasts as well as the antiques.

Bathrooms are shared among the six guest rooms.

Rates are $79 to $89 per night.

West Gate Manor, 71 West Gate, Winnipeg. (204) 772-9788.

Cowan’s Castle

Another gracious mansion Winnipeg bed and breakfast, Cowan’s Castle is in The Gates.

This riverfront property has been restored to its original 1907 character with four guest rooms.

Lovely garden and river views and a 20-minute walk to downtown.

Cowan’s Castle, 29 East Gate, Winnipeg. (204) 786-4848.

Fulham Castle Bed & Breakfast

From the outside, this mansion is a scale reproduction of a medieval castle built in Nottingham, England. Inside, it is restored to its Arts and Crafts grandeur.

A unique and very romantic Winnipeg bed and breakfast, Fulham Castle also has a ghost.

Ask for the Royal Suite and you get both a fireplace and Jacuzzi. Fulham Castle is in leafy Tuxedo, Winnipeg's most tony 'old money' neighbourhood, and a 10-minute stroll from Assiniboine Park.

A stay is $75 to $100 per night.

Fulham Castle Bed & Breakfast, 103 Fulham Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 488-2112.

Winnipeg bed and breakfast - Country stays close to Winnipeg

A Country Garden B&B

Just north of the Perimeter, this quiet country escape in a contemporary executive home is a gardener’s delight, but is still just 25 minutes from downtown.

Since the quiet and the gardens are the big attractions here, A Country Garden is a pet-free zone.

There are three guest rooms – the largest has a Jacuzzi.

A Country Garden earns praise for the country peace and quiet, delicious from-scratch country breakfasts and, as you would expect, a lovely garden.

A Country Garden B&B, 740 Prichard Farm Road, Winnipeg. (204) 661-4902.

White Horse Escape

If you long for a back-to-nature vacation, and especially if you are a birder, White Horse Escape is for you.

A variety of song birds plus eagles, ducks, Canada geese and deer come so close, you can almost touch them (and photograph them) from the balcony of your room. There are also spectacular sunsets.

White Horse Escape is in a small town 15 minutes west of Winnipeg just off Trans Canada Highway. This distinctive and beautiful cedar home is filled with pine antiques.

Fireplace, hot tub, beautiful riverside location, garden, and hosts who are enthusiastic natualists. They are also among the few Winnipeg bed and breakfast homes or inns that welcome well-behaved pets (but call first).

Rooms are $70 to $80 per night.

White Horse Escape, 75 Canon Drive, St. Francois Xavier. (204) 864-2119.

Raylene’s R&R Wellness Spa Plus Bed and Breakfast

Former teacher Raylene Snow offers a unique bed and breakfast/spa experience at her beautifully restored farmhouse near the village of Ste. Anne, which is 30 minutes southeast of Winnipeg.

What you get for $130 per night is a hour-long relaxation massage, then some time in the steam shower, all terrific after a day of sightseeing, hiking or golf (Quarry Oaks and six other courses are near-by).

Rooms are comfortable and country quiet, and you wake up to a big breakfast of waffles with strawberries. Other spa services include mani-pedi, hot stone therapy, Reiki, facials and reflexology.

For guests heading for the hiking, cycling or snowmobile trails, the host can also provide picnic lunches.

Guests can use the sauna, hot tub, canoe, screened verandah and enjoy the walking paths at this overnight wellness spa.

Bed-and-breakfast without spa services is also on offer, for $75 per night. Raylene’s is an adults-only B&B.

Raylene’s R&R Wellness Spa Plus Bed and Breakfast, RR 2, Ste. Anne, Manitoba. (204) 422-6234.
