Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club in Winnipeg

Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club is known for Roots and Blues.

This Winnipeg classic is open Thursdays to Sundays on the corner of Main St. and St. Mary Avenue, across the street from the train station.

This is the place to see up-and-coming talent such as Little Miss Higgins.

Winnipeg Nightlife –Jazz

Jazz lovers, rejoice! Winnipeg gives you lots of places to indulge:

  • What is billed as “refined live jazz” means you can still have a conversation while you enjoy jazz wallpaper nightly year-round at snazzy The Palm Room at Hotel Fort Garry, 222 Broadway.
  • The Current at Inn at the Forks serves up contemporary jazz every Friday and Saturday evening.
  • Paragon Restaurant & Bar has live jazz on Fridays, 220 Carlton.
  • The Jazz on the Rooftop series at Winnipeg Art Gallery is two evenings per month in June, July and August with (cash only) bar and barbeque dinner at 6 p.m. Concerts begin at 7:30. Ticket info at Winnipeg Art Gallery on Memorial.
  • Le Garage Café in St. Boniface has live jazz on Wednesdays and live music nightly except Sundays and Mondays, 166 Provencher Blvd.
  • Mardi Jazz brings jazz performers to Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre on Provencher Blvd. in St. Boniface every Tuesday evening.
  • Norwood Hotel, 112 Marion in St. Boniface, has live jazz every Thursday evening except in May, June, July and August.
  • Winnipeg’s major annual jazz event is Jazz Winnipeg Festival held each year at various Downtown venues in June.

    The Loft Gastropub has live music Fridays and Saturdays, 774 Corydon Ave in Corydon Village.

    Whiskey Dix is on Main Street in The Exchange District

    Whiskey Dix. Here’s an unlikely combination -- Whiskey Dix, classic bank turned contemporary nightclub, is where elegance from a past era meets top 40s, classic rock and country.

    Originally The Bank of British North America, built in 1903-1904, the building is known for its striking paladin style and carved sandstone façade, retaining many of the original architectural details inside.

    Alternating live bands and DJs Tuesdays in summer and every Friday and Saturday night year-round. Dance floor, three bars, and Winnipeg’s largest patio serving nachos, wings, pizza at 436 Main Street.

    Silver Spike. Rock and country bar east of downtown in Transcona with live music Thursdays to Saturdays, 202 Bond.

    Cowboys, at Canad Inns Windsor Park, hot country, Fridays and Saturdays, 1034 Elizabeth.

    Brookland Inn, music Fridays and Saturdays, at 8 Keewatin.

    Winnipeg Nightlife -- Floating Nightclubs

    Winnipeg river cruise boats popular with sightseers by day become floating dinner/dance clubs on summer evenings as the sun sets:

    Paddlewheel Queen has a daily three-hour Sunset Dinner/Dance Cruise (7 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and a later three-hour Moonlight Dance Cruise (10 p.m. to 1 a.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays.

    On the menu: New York steak, prime rib, lobster and crab. May to October. Boarding is at the Alexander dock on Waterfront Drive, north of The Forks. Ticket info: 944-8000; Dinner reservations at 942-4500.

    River Rouge has just been renovated with a sleek new ultra-modern interior. It has Taverna Party Cruises Fridays (Karaoke Night) to Sundays, 10:30 to 2 a.m., attracting a mostly twenty-something crowd.

    Dance floors on both decks, VIP lounge, shipboard cuisine and full bar service. Dock is at 308 Nairn Avenue. Reservations: 774-7009.


    Winnipeg Nightlife – Top Rock, Electronic and Hip-Hop

    Area Nightclub has a DJ Fridays and usually live music Saturdays at 1792 Pembina.

    Aura Nightclub is the place for hip-hop, R&B and reggae Fridays and Saturdays at 575 Portage.

    Level Two Niteclub is upstairs from the Aura with muic Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

    Mystique Nightclub has music Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 441 Main Street.

    The Oak in Canad Inns Transcona is mostly rock on Fridays and Saturdays at 826 Regent St.

    Tijuana Yacht Club

    Top 40s popular with younger adults Thursdys, Fridays and Saturdays. Expect line-ups on weekends. Just north of Polo Park Shopping Centre and across from the old Bomber stadium at At. Matthew & Empress.

    Republic

    House, hip-hop and electro in two rooms with three bars and a setting that appeals to a 25-plus crowd Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.291 Bannatyne Ave. in The Exchange District.

    Winnipeg institution with two horseshoe-shaped bars and a dance floor that has morphed from a mostly country and western spot to a hot dance spot for classic rock and country rock. Open Mondays (Double Booty Shake Monday), Thursdays (live music from the 60s and 70s, R&B, Country classic rock, reggae and calypso and DJ Alfredo playing current hits), Fridays and Saturdays (classic rock and country rock both nights). Voted Best Dance Club in Winnipeg. 1133 Portage.

    Stereo is the dance bar at Canad Inns Windsor Park, with live music Fridays and Saturdays, at 1034 Elizabeth.

    Jaguars Dance Club is at Club Regent Casino, offering up mostly rock and soul every night except Sundays and Mondays at 1425 Regent Street.

    Upperdeck Sports Bar has live music at McPhillips Station Casino every Friday and Saturday night.

    Jeffry's is a restaurant/lounge in East Kildonan with music every Friday and Saturday, 1420 Henderson highway.

    The Pony Corral has music ever Friday and Saturday, at Grant Park Shopping Centre on Grant.

    Bella Vista restaurant has music Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 53 Maryland at Wolesely.

    Winnipeg Nightlife – the Gay scene

    Winnipeg has a strong and vibrant gay community (the photo above is the Gio's float in the annual Gay Pride parade).
