Winnipeg restaurants -- when you visit Winnipeg, I suggest you arrive hungry!

With more than 900 Winnipeg restaurants, you are going to love the variety and choices you will find when you visit Winnipeg!

Ignore that old joke about sure there are plenty of restaurants, and it's only half of them where they hand you your food out the window.

True, there are a lot of fast food places -- you'll see all the usual national and international banners.

You already know what they have to offer, so I won't include them.

The delightful surprise about Winnipeg is the rest of the story -- an incredible array of:

  • ethnic fare from everywhere
  • European cuisines both traditional and nouveau
  • standard North American fare, well-prepared
  • the emerging Manitoba cuisine for locavores including wild rice and top quality pork, bison and pickerel
  • hand-made ice cream and gelati
  • locally-brewed beers
  • Fall suppers

  • and possibly you'll be invited to that essential Prairie experience, a Social.

  • What are you REALLY hungry for?

    Dim sum? Spicy Caribbean fare?

    Authentic French or Italian cuisine?

The world’s best perogies? The ultimate burger and hand-cut fries? Vegan or vegetarian offerings? A sumptuous Sunday buffet?

    Or all-you-can-eat for under $10?

The best pizza you’ve ever tasted?

Are you looking for Winnipeg’s best bars, pubs, patios, or family restaurants?

Or the perfect spot for a romantic dinner-for-two?

    An old-fashioned drive-in?

    Incredible BBQ?

Non-stop madness (and good prime rib) at a comedy dinner theatre?

    Festival street food?

A spectacular local wine to sample - or perhaps you'd like to visit the winery?

I've done the research (tough job, sometimes) and I can promise you that Winnipeg has it all, and I will write about all of the many splendours of Winnipeg restaurants on this site.

Come to the heart of the continent and you find GREAT restaurants

    And plenty of them!

With more restaurants (by population) than anywhere else in North America, and with a startling cultural diversity, you will find every type of ethnic food, and not just Downtown but throughout the city.

Hotel restaurant breakfasts can be very good, but (particularly at the larger hotels downtown) also tend to be pricey. On this site I will tell you where to find the places locals go to for breakfast and lunch.

Sleep in on Sunday, then enjoy the sheer indulgence of Sunday Brunch.

    Big appetite?

    Me too.

    So I'm including all the

Brunches and Buffets and the budget-stretching All-You-Can-Eat lunches or dinners (all under $10) that I could find!

Family Favourites are restaurants kids like so parents can relax and enjoy their meals as well.

Treats and Ice Cream will point you to the city’s best places for ice cream, cake, chocolate, candy and gelati.

Want a quiet drink with a friend, or a relaxing few hours in a great sports bar to catch the game? That’s on the Bars & Pubs page.

For special occasions – or just for a special evening – Winnipeg has wonderful fine dining including French and Italian cuisines and chefs who are defining the emerging Manitoba cuisine, featuring top quality local fare.

On balmy summer and autumn afternoons and evenings, the place to be is one of Winnipeg’s Best Patios such as this one, at The Forks.

Still undecided? Winnipeg restaurants that are simply Too Good To Miss.

Winnipeg restaurants -- need to know

All Winnipeg restaurants are totally non-smoking, however outdoor patios are not.

Reservations aren’t always necessary, but they are a good idea at white tablecloth restaurants and bistros, especially before/after theatre (in winter) and on weekends.

Relatively few downtown restaurants are open on Sundays (the Chinese restaurants are an exception). Those that are generally open either at noon, or for dinner only.

Dine in when you visit Winnipeg

If all the temptations of Winnipeg restaurants can't urge you out the door, order in!

Mobile Maitre D will deliver from some of the city’s most popular restaurants (among them many reviewed on this site). Call 777-3463 to order.
