Budget Winnipeg hotels stretch your travel dollars!

Budget Winnipeg hotels offer rooms that are clean and where you will be safe and secure, but they have fewer amenities than Winnipeg's midrange hotels or Family hotels in Winnipeg.

You can find a number of cheap – but not at all cheerful – budget Winnipeg hotels in the downtown core. I don’t recommend them because I wouldn't stay at any of them, with the exception of the city’s two no-frills but welcoming, clean and safe hostels.

If you prefer a motel, head to the suburbs (only 20 minutes or so from downtown). The best choices (for easy access to Downtown) are west of Downtown on and near Portage Avenue or close to the airport or south of Downtown (near University of Manitoba) or just east of Downtown (St. Boniface).

Most budget Winnipeg hotels have VLTs and off-sales beer outlets. All Winnipeg hotels and restaurants are non-smoking (but outdoor patios aren't).

Downtown and Airport budget Winnipeg hotels

Carlton Inn -- basic, but close to Winnipeg Convention Centre

Carlton Inn Winnipeg is just a block from Winnipeg Convention Centre

If fancy amenities don't matter and you just want a clean, reliable place with free parking downtown for under $100, the two-and-a-half star Carlton Inn is a good, comfortable, practical choice.

You get the basics, but this smaller hotel is a block from shopping, just steps from Winnipeg Convention Centre, it has a restaurant and bar, and one of the best restaurant-pubs in the city, The Elephant and Castle, is half a block away (at the Delta).

They also have an outdoor pool and pets are welcome for a very reasonable $80 and up per night (plus tax).

Assiniboine Gordon Inn on the Park – great location, lovely city park!

Assiniboine Gordon Inn on the Park, Winnipeg

This two-and-a-half star budget Winnipeg hotel is on Portage Avenue west of Downtown and near Assiniboine Park, Canad Inns Stadium (home of the Blue Bombers) and Polo Park Shopping Centre.

The pleasant surprise here is although this motel is right on Portage Avenue (making it easy to get downtown), it is also across the street from one of the city’s most beautiful small parks.

Cross Portage and in three minutes you find a walking trail along a stream, under mature elm trees, with the trails linking to two other parks and a leafy neighbourhood. This park also has a supervised children’s wading pool and playground.

Assiniboine Gordon Inn on the Park has a licensed restaurant, a small outdoor patio, and pets are OK. $55 to $95 per night (plus tax).

Assiniboine Gordon Inn on the Park, 1975 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 888-4806.

Boulevard Motel – simple comfort, small price

This modest-looking budget Winnipeg hotel is west of downtown, which is about half an hour away by bus or about 20 minutes if you’re driving. Pleasant and close to shopping and a five-minute walk from the West Portage branch of YMCA/YWCA of Winnipeg , (opens in a new window) which offers adult day passes for $8.

Some rooms at The Boulevard have kitchenettes, all have cable TV and a breakfast restaurant is next door. They also welcome pets. $45 to $65 per night, but they also offer reduced weekly and monthly rates.

Boulevard Motel, 3120 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 837-5891.

Howard Johnson Express Inn West – the familiar HoJo experience

This two-and-a-half star budget Winnipeg hotel is a member of the popular chain, complete with dowdy ’80s-style décor (except for the lobby), but is included here because it has more than you'd expect of a more modestly-priced hotel, including Jacuzzi, sauna, wireless Internet, a restaurant and a cozy pub plus live entertainment on weekends.

No pool, but the West Portage branch of YMCA/YWCA of Winnipeg (where you can work out or swim with an inexpensive day-pass--$8 for adults or $12 for the whole family; there's a link above on this page) is just down the street.

The far-west Winnipeg location is close to horse racing at Assiniboia Downs, Red River Exhibition grounds, restaurants and shopping.

Rates are about $70 to $100 per night.

Howard Johnson Express Inns West, 3740 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 837-5831.

St. James Hotel – this budget Winnipeg hotel is a Tudor-style pub!

St. James Hotel, Winnipeg

If your taste runs to the funky and you don’t mind sleeping over a Tudor-style pub, the St. James is a budget-boosting option.

Just 20 rooms, all small, and some have shared bathrooms.

Clean, not particularly quiet, and zero amenities (except for the pub), but a convenient location near restaurants, and the mall and it's cheap -- $55 to $65 a night.

St. James Hotel, 1719 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 888-2341.

Super 8 Motel-West Winnipeg – a no frills choice on the west side of town

The Super 8 is close to the race-track in Winnipeg

Super 8 is a chain and this one has rooms that are adequate (if lacking in charm) but makes up for this in convenience. Just minutes from the airport, shopping, Assiniboia Downs (the racetrack) and you can bus downtown in about half an hour.

There's also a park (with playground) right behind this budget Winnipeg hotel.

In-room Internet, a restaurant next-door, tasty continental breakfast included, Cable TV and pets are welcome, all for about $80 to $90 per night.

Super 8 Motel-West Winnipeg, 3760 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 831-9800.

Canad Inns Express Fort Garry, a three-star stay south of downtown

If you prefer to be south of Downtown (near University of Manitoba’s main campus), this three-star hotel offers spacious rooms and continental breakfast is included. It also has a pizza restaurant and nightclub.

Close to plenty of other restaurant choices, nightclubs, and next store to the larger Canad Inns Fort Garry, which has a waterpark, restaurant, tavern and dinner theatre. Express guests are welcome to use the amenities next door. (To do this, just leave you room key with desk staff at Canad Inns Fort Garry).

About $60 to $90 per night.

Canad Inns Express Fort Garry, 1792 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg. (204) 269-6955.

Haven’t found what you’re looking for among these budget Winnipeg hotels?

Many Winnipeg Bed & Breakfasts offer single or double rooms for under $100 per night (the average is about $75).
