Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Centre – great waterpark near the airport
This large hotel (259 rooms!) has an equally huge indoor water park with a 140-foot waterslide, a fitness centre, hot tub, fridges and microwaves in the rooms, a restaurant and a sports bar.
What’s fun for younger kids is the dino-themed indoor pool with waterslides and waterfalls, plus there are kids’ themed rooms and poolside family rooms. $125 and up; ask about the family rate.
Victoria Inn Hotel, 1808 Wellington, Winnipeg. (204-786-4801).
Canad Inns – theme rooms, waterparks, restaurants and more…
Canad Inns is a Winnipeg-based chain with six locations here [others in the chain are in Brandon, Manitoba and North Dakota].
Canad Inns scores well on the family Winnipeg hotels checklist and all are popular; these four are the ones closest to most Winnipeg attractions and restaurants. Each is about 20 minutes from Downtown by car, or half an hour by bus.
In addition to great waterslide pools, Canad Inns have theme rooms, restaurants and lounges, and computers in the rooms (free computer games are available at the front desk). They all have some rooms (or floors) that are accessible for people using wheelchairs.
Canad Inns Polo Park, west of downtown, is close to the mall and allows pets (the other Canad Inns do not).
Canad Inns Fort Garry (pictured above right) is south of Downtown. It also has a pizza restaurant, sports bar and Celebrations Dinner Theatre.
Canad Inns Garden City, northwest of downtown, is near the casino.
About $110 and up per night, plus tax. ($75 and up at the Garden City location).
Canad Inns Fort Garry, 1824 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg. (204) 261-7450.
Canad Inns Polo Park, 1405 St. Matthews Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 775-8791.
Canad Inns Garden City, 2100 McPhillips Street, Winnipeg. (204) 633-0024.
Clarion Hotel & Suites – close to shopping and the ballpark
Clarion has an indoor waterpark with a two-storey waterslide, 12 theme rooms with Jacuzzis, a fitness centre, business centre, Fireside Lounge, airport shuttle and high-speed internet in every room.
One of the great things about this family Winnipeg hotel is the pool is on the west side, so you can swim while enjoying a prairie sunset.
There is also a full-service spa and a pancake house/coffee shop, but what people mostly comment on is the great location on Portage right next to Winnipeg’s most popular mall, Polo Park and a short stroll from Bombers stadium. Also, there’s plenty of free parking.
Newer but conservative in style, it is welcoming and comfortable.
Pets can stay for $15 per night, part of which is donated to Winnipeg Humane Society. The Clarion also has a popular romance package. About $160/night and up (plus tax).
Clarion Hotel & Suites, 1445 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. (204-774-5110).
Best Western Pembina Inn & Suites – super service for a midrange price
Ok, it’s a well-known chain, but this one gets mentioned among family Winnipeg hotels of choice because they really deliver, both in facilities (nothing fancy, but very clean and comfy) and friendly service that is highly praised for being attentive to special family needs (if you have kids, you know how these can crop up when you're away from home), all for a mid-range price.
A friend stayed here recently with her mother (who is disabled) and two (very active) kids. They enjoyed their vacation and our friend especially praised extra efforts the staff made to make their stay a success.
Computers in the rooms, a pool with a waterslide, hot tub, fitness centre, free coffee and tea anytime, free soup served in the evenings and continental breakfast are included for about $100 a night. Wheel-chair accessible, airport shuttle, very friendly and helpful staff, and pets are welcome. For all these reasons, this place is popular with families.
Best Western Pembina Inn & Suites, 1714 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg. (204) 942-0101.
Family-pleasing budget-booster family Winnipeg hotels
Canad Inns Express Fort Garry – family value south of downtown
A budget option is to stay at the smaller Canad Inns Express Fort Garry, right next door to the larger Canada Inns Fort Garry. You can still enjoy all of the amenities at the larger hotel (including the kid-pleasing pool) but rooms here are a considerable saving -- $60 per night and up.
Canad Inns Express Fort Garry, 1792 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg. (204) 269-6955.
Canadiana Thriftlodge – another great family vacation choice
This little bison stands guard(almost cuddly, isn’t he?) at the three-star Canadiana Thriftlodge, about 15 minutes west of downtown.
This motel offers a lot for a budget price including an indoor pool and waterpark, Internet, microwaves and fridges in the rooms, sauna, and a coffee shop.
It’s near shopping, restaurants and the casino and is not far from the airport.
Fridays are Karaoke Night in the lounge.
The Canadiana also welcomes pets.
About $70 per night (plus tax) and up.
Canadiana Thriftlodge, 1400 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 786-3471.
Airport Motor Inn – Amenities and low price near the airport
Relatively modest (two-and-a-half stars) but pleasant and it has a hot tub, sauna, family restaurant, nightclub, patio, games room and indoor waterpark, all close to both the airport and Polo Park Shopping Centre.
And all for a surprisingly modest $60 per night (plus tax) and up.
Airport Motor Inn, 1800 Ellice Avenue, Winnipeg. (204) 783-7035.

Does someone in your group or family have accessibility issues?
Most family Winnipeg hotels and motels offer at least some rooms, suites or floors that are accessible for people who have mobility challenges or rely on a wheelchair.
That said, I’ve learned first-hand (during a recent knee episode) that some “accessible” places are a lot more accessible than others. Generally, newer buildings are easier to navigate; while the historic ones (such as Fort Garry Hotel) have elevators, but they also have stairs, curbs and other barriers and/or it is a struggle to get from parking to the door.
These are the hotels and motels that that I have found the easiest to get into (and around in):
